After seeing the nes forerunner 970 I am wondering if Garmin is pivoting towards having similar specced flagships across their sereis, and not just the Fenix line as the abvous choice for the Creme du la creme?
For many the Forerunner has been the preferred choice, while the Fenix series has reigned supreme as Garmin's undisputed flagship – robust, packed with features, and often the natural step up for those who wanted the utmost in material quality and versatility. However, with the launch of the Forerunner 970, I think we are seeing the outlines of a shift. The question is no longer if the Forerunner can be a flagship, but whether it now offers so much that the Fenix is no longer the obvious choice for Forerunner users seeking the best a Garmin can provide. The new Forerunner 970 builds on the legacy of the Forerunner 965 but takes several steps into the premium segment, a domain Fenix has long had to itself.
Premium Materials and Design Approaching Fenix Standards
One of the most notable upgrades is the switch from Gorilla Glass DX to sapphire crystal for the lens. I really love the sapphre screens on my watch as I have a tendancy to be a little bit abisuve with my watches. My watch bump into surfaces and things every now and then. With a screen that exposed, I am wondering why they havent implementet this feature before in forerunner before.
Advanced Health and Recovery
The introduction of the Elevate V5 heart rate sensor with support for ECG readings. I think the elevate V5 is better, everyone seriously invested in their heartrate for insight and as a tool for trainign will be getting an extarnal heart rate sensor anywasys. ECG is nice addition as well. Additionally, skin temperature measurement for continuous monitoring and a new "Evening Report" that gives a summary of recovery, sleep, and HRV trends are included. I really look forward to this feature rolled out to other Garmins as I have pivotetd more and more towards a dedicated evening ritual, and it is nice having your Garmin acompannayin that. Features That Blur the Lines
Perhaps the most symbolic new feature is the integration of an LED flashlight, a function that has almost become a trademark of the outdoor oriented Fenix and instinct series. I am not surprised if Garmin will rolll ut buildt inn flashslight for most of their watches in the future, as it is veru useful. Furthermore, we see a built-in microphone and speaker. This one I do think is a bit controversial as I am wondering how many this actually is catering towards. Garmin did hit a nerve when they started relasing Amoled-watches, but at least I am one of the old memory in pixel screen-lovers, but thats a whole other story!
Still a Forerunner at Heart – But with Fenix Ambitions
Of course, the Forerunner 970 retains its focus on running and multisport, with new, specialized metrics like "step speed loss," "running tolerance," and a wealth of new activity profiles – from jump rope in the gym category to obstacle course racing and an expanded range of outdoor recreational activities such as canoeing, snorkeling, and hunting. This shows that the core audience and identity of the forerunner is still key. With the Forerunner 970, Garmin has created a watch that is no longer just the "little brother" to the Fenix. It has gained features and a finish that make it a real contender as a flagship. For the Forerunner enthusiast who previously looked to Fenix for the best materials, advanced health features, and certain practical additions like an LED flashlight, the Forerunner 970 now emerges as a very attractive and perhaps more focused alternative. That means the choice between the Forerunner 970 and a comparable Fenix model will increasingly depend on specific preferences related to design aesthetics, any remaining Fenix-exclusive features (which may become fewer and fewer), and, not least, whether one primarily identifies as a runner/triathlete (Forerunner) or an adventurer needing the most robust and versatile option (Fenix). Regardless, I think it's clear: the Forerunner series, with the 970 model, has taken a big step up, now offering a flagship experience that doesn't necessarily make Fenix the only, obvious high-end choice.
